I think I have answered my own question. After posting this message I went to the knowledge base on
www.microsoft.com and prowled around a bit. The KB suggested putting after the entry name (MSN),
redundantly, the username and the password. I had tried this before without success. Then I rememberd a peculiarity of
MSN. When you enter your username in the Dialup phone book window you prefix it with 'MSN/' thus
'rasdial MSN MSN/kennleland password'. I had forgotten this, since there seems to be no way to edit the user
name and password in the directory after it is created and thus see what the username and password were.
Presumably if entry is haywire you must create a new one and hope you have guessed right.

It looks like I am "there". Wow (s).
