This sounds familiar. I havent had much luck with the Virus Scan Console's Automatic Dat Update and Automatic Product Upgrade tasks. I think I might of seen this same error when trying to run one of those options.

Instead, I download the dat file myself, then you have to unzip it in the correct directory (like ..\NetworkAssociates\VirusScan NT) then manually trigger a full scan and it sees the updated DAT just fine. HTH.
