The three most common types of files out there are .PCX, .BMP, and
.GIF. While these all have their limitations, they are also all
recognized by nearly everything. And the inherent compression that they
offer is pretty darn good in most cases.
.TIF files are too big for most of what I do.
.JPG files are compressed using a lossy compression scheme
I don't have any experience with .PDF.
