you can work on a COPY of that file and VSS will basically mark these as 2
versions

I am not sure what you are saying here - do you mean VSS told you the
class lib was already open ?

because only one person can change a single file at a given time (to
prevent overwriting and or changing something while the other one thinks
athe code is there etc.) sharing means you create a seperate copy to work
with
then you can decide which copy is better etc. - if you share the whole
project you will get a 2nd copy of the whole project
