IE is multi-threaded. But even if it wasn't, you have separate copies open at the same time so they are going to run independently of one another.
The problem you are experiencing is probably due to your access to the Internet. I don't know what you are using to connect so this may or may not apply. While your first copy of IE downloads the HTML for your search results, this may hog all of your available incoming bandwidth. So while the request may go out to the new site, its HTML can't be downloaded until the first stream is done. This is very true if you are using a 56K (or less) modem connection.
My advice is to get a bigger pipe < s >. I have DSL and I don't experience any of those problems. I did when I used a modem conection or even a 56K frame relay.
