Charlie- curious, did you ever try the alternate solutions to your connectivity problem that were suggested here? I don't remember if you said you could see your other box with a ping to the IP address or not. FWIW, I don't know if my cable company has closed the NetBIOS port or not, I don't think it would affect me because of my configuration. I have nodes all over the house connected to the internet via a single cable modem, a server with 2 NICs, and a switch. I can't see machines in my network neighborhood, but I can get to any other machine with an IP address, and if I need to resolve names, I use the lmhost file.
