>What is SET REPROCESS set to. It sounds like it is set to AUTOMATIC and you are running into a locking issue.

Thanks Matt. This definitely sounds like it explains what is happening. In my case reprocess was set to 0, not automatic but the esc behaves the same. Now I just have to figure out why there might be lock issues. In this case no other users are in the system.
