I've experienced something like this but not on Novell.
What I did was the following:
- removed all indices for all tables (delete tag all)
- packed each table (pack)
- rebuild the indices from scratch
- browse through each table to see if you can find bogus records

All these actions did not solve it the first time. For some reason bogus records were present in my tables. I removed them one by one and than did the pack and reindex again.
