Well, this was back when we had an IBM/360 at the heart of the system -- punch cards, and terminals were the latest, greatest interface. He got some classified docs from AT&T which identified the frequencies of the tones used in touch tone dialing. So, he built himself a modem, and then a keyboard. He was able to spoof the 360 in to thinking that he was one of the terminals on campus, and was able to type in his programming projects in the comfort of his own dorm room. It worked great for the semester. But, when we returned from summer break, some phone service folks had discovered the rewiring and set it back. Nothing was ever said, but he decided to lay low, anyways. Pretty impressive stuff for that day.

I guess these days Napster is the rage on campus. The IU network administrators decided to filter MP3 files out after determining that 80% of the network traffic at the university consisted of them.
