It occurs to me that there are smaller parks or botanical gardens close to Brisbane, which are worth a stroll if you just have a couple of hours to spare. The farm country around Brisbane is pleasant, and you might see a kangaroo or two in the pastures. We didn't make it to the beach, partly because we had a tight schedule and partly because it was early spring there and not that warm.
My Mother knew someone who grew up in Brisbane who told her there was nothing to do there. That is relative, of course, and depends on what interests you. I'm sure some actual Australians will chime in here. Any place is more interesting if you like birdwatching, as I do.
