One more thing -- I also build in a "lock-out" feature in my apps to prevent anyone else from running the app if I set the flag. This is done in a 1 record table with one logical field located in a subdirectory of its own that is read-only to everyone but me. When they launch the app, they get a friendly message that the app is unavailable due to maintenance, gives them an OK button, then quits the app. Because my app recognizes who the user is by getting the USERID from the server (NOT from an environment variable that can be changed by the user), I get a second option to unlock the app or bypass the app shutdown so I am the only one who can run the app.

Without this feature, you may never get everyone out at the same time.
