The menu pad prompt is inserted into the menu code as a string, bracketed by quotes. I don't beieve the compiler replaces things within strings. The status bar text is inserted as is, exactly the way you type it in. Since there qre no quotes, the compiler performs the replace.
The same behavior takes place in Genmenu and GenmenuX so I don't think it is a bug. It is by design.
Steven Black's INTL Toolkit does handle this but I don't know how. While you don't need the toolkit, you might contact him through his web site and ask how it is accomplished.
