I just use the View Designer to setup the base table with updateable fields. Then, I generate the view definition through GenView (available in the library here) and modify SQL by hand, which allows for this and other syntax and complexity not permitted by the View Designer.

If you're sticking with the designer, one of the other approaches you came up with would probably work for you.
