>>A co-worker was beginning to develop an app to import data from an Excel file and then do whatever manipulations were needed. He created a dbf by saving the files as dbase III format and then zapped the file (so was blank). Went into VFP and used the table he had just created. Issued the command: APPEND FROM filename.xls TYPE XL5 (also try TYPE XLS). VFP seemed to think for a moment and then just disappeard/shut down without notice. I decided to try this on my computer to see what the results were...exactly the same thing happened.

George,
>Is .xls file in Excel5.0 format ? That's the only version AFAIK that doesn't have bugs with 'append from'. Also VFP6 SP3 has corrected some of the bugs.
>'import from' might be a solution. Another one is to save as CSV, delimited or dBaseIII format from Excel.

Hi Cetin,
Thanks for the reply. I just talked to my co-worker and he found that there was a 'heading' hidden in the sheet. Once it was saved without that it seemed to import fine. And yup, we are checking to see if they can send the file in another format or possibly use OLE to export from Excel into dbf format. Thanks again for your help!
