In your report field for m.fax, use this expression TRANSFORM (m.fax).

TRANSFORM has the wonderful capability of changing any data type into a character field and leaves character fields the way they are. This should allow you to see what data the report actually is seeing.

If you're getting an .F. or .T., then the variable is being created as a logical, but not assigned the string value you desire.
