It's hard for me to guess. It still seems like a good idea to rewrite the whole thing with an OR instead of a UNION as Jay van Santen has suggested.
This may sound crazy, but is the one student from the first query the same as one of the students in the second? The two WHERE conditions on dropdate look mutually exclusive, so that shouldn't happen. But I always get confused by .NULL. and empty values and their propagation.
