For Altavista, Hotbot, Lycos and others you need to put meta tags at the top of each page to help the engine index you better. Problem is that many webmasters know this and it is hard to get indexed well.

The second stage is to submit each page to the search engines.

Yahoo submissions are reviewed by editors. It is getting more and more difficult each year to get on Yahoo. The following improves your chances:
- get a graphic designer to make your website look professional
- put a link back to yahoo on your front page
- choose an appropriate category for your site
- having a domain name makes is easier
- using free hosting makes it more difficult to get listed
