There are known issues with the Novell Client... you may want to do a search on Novell's site and MS's site. There are certain settings in the client that are reccommended to be disabled that have to do with caching and other features that are detrimental to a database application.

I've personally fought this battle in the past, and the only conclusions I could come to (with open trouble tickets at both Novell and Microsoft) were (1) to install and run microsoft's client on w95,98 or (2) install Windows NT and use the Novell Client - this software does not experience the problems you describe.
