If both run Win9x, you can purchase a special parallel port cable (one used to come with LapLink - yellow cable with two DB25s on it) commonly available from places like CompUSA for less than $25, and then use the built-in Direct Cable Connect (DCC) optional Communication Component that comes with both Win95 and Win98; you can do much the same thing with RAS and DCC if one needs to use NT, and you can always buy LapLink, which comes with the right cable and an easy-to-use GUI and clear instructions. It's not 100Mbps EtherNet, but it's at least 8-10x faster than a null modem serial connection. I believe that there's also support for USB-based networking, but I'm not aware of the name of an off-the-shelf package that comes with the needed cables and hub, but the odds are that it exists, and the USB connection can in theory support data rates approaching the speed of an EtherNet connection.
