In a 3-tier app what are the pro and cons for using XML instead of ADO for data transfer?

Front end could be anything. Middle is VFP or VB DLL (in MTS). Backend is SQL Server 2000 or maybe Oricle.

Approximately how many records can XML handle before it gets too slow to be practical?
