I may be missing something but it seems to me, from your code example, that you should call your screen and then put the code you've listed not the other way around.

Have you tried putting all of the setup code (the code you've listed minus the last do screen line) in the setup of your screen?

You might also need to look at the set skip command. I don't remember if it was still around for 2.6. Also you might want to look at the in window in screen options for the browse command.
