I did this years ago (I think it was VFP3). I simply added a field to the cursor that populated the grid and after it was ordered I replaced the value of the field with the correct number. If I remember correctly I used a scan/endscan with a numeric variable. The down side is that it has to be re-numbered every time you reorder the cursor or view or add or delete a record.
