Some users must have feedback whenever it takes time to perform an operation within an application. To some persons one second is too long a period to wait for anything and they reboot the computer. We all know what happens next, so enter user feedback in the form of a progress bar.

I have used progress bars on tables of small (1000) to large (1,000,000) records. On small files it is not worth the effort, unless you have many tags on a table. On a large file, you take a performance hit which I have measured as eight to one. That is it takes eight times longer for an index to be created with a progress bar than without it.

I have created several progress bars for my foundation library and use them when required. Leave it up to the user what is to be done. Sometimes training the user helps, but not always.
