AFAIK, it doesn't. All indications from posts I've read here (particularly from Ed Rauh) indicate that the above method is the only way to do it under those conditions. I think NT 4 is a little different, came with SP5 or 6, I think.
I'll do a search and post one or two thread numbers to you on this subject.
