I agree with Ed R. By changing the way a combo works you're breaking a UI the users are familiar with and will just end up confusing them.
When I've needed similiar functionality, I'll show a textbox and place a command button next to it with an ellipse (...) for the caption. It's pretty standard that "..." means open a new form or dialog.
