John and Larry are correct (of course), but in addition having a table in the DE allows you to see it in the dropdown of available fields when setting the controlsource of a textbox (or other control), allows you to set the index and filter (if you REALLY want to use a filter), drag a field or entire table to the form in question and many other convenient programming tools built into the form designer.
