I have apps that have been storing word docs in General fields ever since FP2.6 and good-old Word 2. It works well as long as the correct version of Word is installed. We now have multi-gigabyte databases in SQL Server or Oracle.
We did it for security- we o medical apps and it's almost impossible to allow typists and temp typists to access Word documents securely.
