Actually my strategy isn't needed. The original problem is no longer or I should say I can't reproduce it. Who knows, at one point I couldn't use EVAL on a string longer that 254 characters and now it seems to be fine. We only got the error on an NT 4.0 machine but now it doesn't create any problems.
