750 tables and 1200 index tags seems too overwelming for me! Even if VFP database can handle it, I don't know if I should let it?! My solution would be to split-up the tables into 2 or more database (if RI is not a problem but I can't believe all those tables are inter-related anyway :) ) This, at least in theory, should speed things up not just in REMOVE TABLE operation but overall.
