VFP will disappear when folks stop using PCs. Not before then. If folks don't stop using PCs and use Win9x or W2xxx, then there well always be a use for VFP, providing MS doesn't tweek the OSs to force an upgrade to some future GUI RAD they introduce. By then, folks could switch to Linux as the OS and continue developing in a GUI RAD xbase so close to VFP the differences would be worth mentioning. Unless corporate craze for patenting 'intellectual property' takes using the right mouse button to bring up a dialog out of circulation, like Amazon.com did with 'one click' shopping, or that British firm is trying to do with their 'patent' on HTML technology, and other unscrupulous hijackings of prior art. Some so trivial anyone with a moments though and need could 'invent' it. An example, besides 'one click' shopping: bubble sorts.

I plan to retire in 10 or 15 years and I would predict that VFP5 or VFP6 and/or apps made using them will be running on some 586 machine with Win95 as the OS even then.

The same can be said for OSs. As long as someone is using a Sinclar then that OS is being used. Ditto for TI94, Sphere, Altair, Rex, etc... Even BOB would be around if MS hadn't shelved it. In fact, shelving propriatry code may not eliminate it from being used. Software doesn't wear out.


I've been writing code since 1968. In the past 32 years I have learned, and used as tools to make money, close to a dozen languages. All of those, and many others, are still being used by some folks, somewhere, because each was written for a purpose and have syntax that makes coding for that purpose an easy thing to do, and the need still exists.
