If possible, I suggest that you use code39 instead, at least I know for sure that using it is very straight forward.

I think EAN is the same or simmilar to the UPC code. One singularity of the UPC code is that each digit has two possible representations, depending on whether this digit is in an odd or even position within the whole string you're encoding.
