PMFJI, linking through ODBC transacts with your text file, which remains thus. APPEND FROM sucks the text file into a table and thereafter operations happen on the table and not the text file.

Having said that, APPEND FROM followed later by a COPY TO... TYPE SDF is a very handy way to go too and you don't need the ODBC layer.
