I didn't know where else to put this so here it goes.

I am trying to upgrade a Packard Bell bios with little luck. The problem is that the old PB is a 486/66dx2. It has two memory slots. When I put a simm in slot 1, it recognizes the correct size of the simm. When I put an additional simm in slot 2, it thinks it is of size 16 megs for whatever simm I place in it. So when I try to run windows, I crash. I think that this is becuase if there is only 4 megs installed in slot 2, but the computer thinks there is 16 megs, this means that it thinks there is an additional 12 megs off address space. When the computer tries to access the additional space, Windows blue screens. What I have done to fix this problem is to put the 16 meg simm in slot 2 and the 4 meg simm in slot 1. This seems to correct the problem and windows doesn't die and also the computer reports the correct memory size 4 (base meme) + 4 (slot1) + 16 (slot2) = 24 megs.

So what I was trying to do is to find a bios upgrade that may fix the problem. However, I haven't found the correct bios driver. I think model is something like pb420cd. It has PhoenixBios 4.03. Basically I found a packard bell ftp site which lists a bunch of bios upgrades but doesn't have the 420. I found others 450, 550, etc...

I have checked numerous un-official packard bell web sites with many many many dead links. I know that 3rd pary bios producers sell their bios upgrades for 50 bux (dang computer ain't even worth 50 bux). I am sure that there is an upgrade to the bios but can't find it. If you have any info I would appreciate it. Thanks in advance.
