The debate over our 'Official' languages is annyoing anywhere in Canada, not just in la belle provence. Lately there was an article that stated the federal cival service used unfair hireing practices, giving francophones preference. Outside of Quebec, francophones make up less than 25% of the federal workforce. In Quebec, anglophones are less that 6%. The author of the article was annoyed that these figures were so LOW in Quebec! and felt they should be more representative of language distribution. I hate to dissapoint, but it seems to me that you should have staff equiped to speak the language of the clients, not on some silly quota. While many of the people (clients) I work with are Francophones, their English is far better than my French. Thanks to string tables and babblefish.com I can do my interfaces in both languages. But I will not do my code/comments in anything but English.
We have a web site that is not officaly sanctioned by the DND because it is not in both offical languages. We are not allowed to do the translation ourselves, it must be done by the fedaeral translation bureau, and they charge for thier service.
Thats my .02$ (.0014 $US) worth.
