I'm going to look into hacking the dbc to at least be able to generate a list of any view that's affected by my structure changes.

Erik, one starting point for the logic of determining the updatability of a new field would be an all or nothing proposition. If all the other fields are updatable and the new ones aren't, then they should be as well.
