That was a feature introduced with Novell NW version 4. Newer version of Novell's Client32 will try to reconnect if a short disconnect is detected. This would only be successful if the disconnect was short enough that the server did not detect a dead connection and clear it.

The source of this might be found on Novell's KB. Other than that, I am not sure where you can get printed documentation. Maybe a Novell CNE study book?
