Unless there's a need for the original document, I simply map applicable segments into my db schema; if I needed to retain the original doc, then simply compress it and stuff it in a memo fields along with a reference to my equivalent relational entity type and applicable PKey for that document; usually, the individual B2B partnership negotiates some supportable subset of the full document for their exchanges. For example, even though one of my partners transmits a BEG including BEG02 data element 92, we will support only 4 posible values, and we ignore a DTM element entirely. Except as a control document, which would only serve to confirm proper transmission or for validating incorporation of disputed implementation, the source typically does have to exist.
