I used what MS calls the grid builder to populate the grid, not the form wizard. I suppose it really is a wizard, and I'm not sure why MS makes the distinction.
I don't typically use wizards, because I generally don't like the result.
However, the builder should be setting properties that you can change later, but it is not. The controlSource property for both the column and the textBoxes were empty (as created by the wizard), yet somehow the grid functioned properly. The columns that I had modified (or manually added) were not messed up when I deleted the first column.
It won't take me much time to recreate it manually.
