Yes it really works! This is much easier than the Union with NOT IN, although this is a good way although. On my data, the performance is the same in both versions, but this is because my query is not rushmore optimized in both versions (but it doesn't matter in this case). I suppose, if rushmore optimized, Garret's version is much faster (with the high price on join.)
