Michelle,

I beleive microwaves can interfere with the operation of cardiac pacemakers if the door is not shut properly. The holes in the "grid" in the door's window are supposed to be of a size that the microwaves can't go through, and if the door shuts/seals properly there is no danger.

Since I am not an expert I don't guarantee that the above is an "exactly" correct explanation, but I think I'm close.
