In a recent survey, it turned out that over 50% of all Linux developers still rely on (prefer, in fact) command line tools. Mainly GCC, the GNU C Compiler. Hook this to the various widget set of your choice, GTK, Qt, etc., and you are good to go. Well, not good to go like in Delphi or VB, but it gets the job done.

Also, as you research Linux stuff, you will find a lot of zealots who refuse to use any tools or apps that are not completely free (I mean, even the source has to be free). There even those who won't use Borland's upcoming Kylix toolset (basically Delphi for Linux) because Borland has the gall to CHARGE MONEY for it. *horror*. In case you can't tell, I am being sarcastic. Those who _insist_ that everyone go the open source way sort of get under my skin. I tihnk software developers have the right to charge for something if they wish, and if they can get away with it. Let the laws of economics drive the evolution!
