I think Borland C++ builder is a fantastic product, however I do find it tends to have to play catchup with current Microsoft API's and technologies. For example, DirectX support has always taken a little time to appear, not from Microsoft but third parties.
From an ANSI point of view the MS offering is a little less than compliant :-) but all things considered it is my preferred development tool. At my previous employer we used C++ builder to RAD develop specialised internal tools but our final products and API's where all developed in MS Visual C++.
Also MFC is an important framework/technology that is especially good at constructing user interface elements. It also allows you easily incorporate Automation, ActiveX controls and monolithic applications. Again using MS Visual C++ gives me less problems when this gets upgraded.
BTW This is my personal preference based on my experiences, pick the tool that's right for you to achieve your short/long term goals.
