The sense you don't see is to provide the ability to hold more precise information than you normaly use for rounding purposes.

Taxes, discounts, interests and so on won't lead to cents but to fractions of cents. When you have a lot of them, they start to count. <g>

But to be honest, I don't use the currecy type myself if I'm not forced to.
