If you're using 300MHz Pentia, then the built-in serial ports will have 16550 (or compatible) UARTs. Older, slower computers with earlier UARTs sometimes suffered from buffer overruns (and data loss/corruption) if the CPU couldn't clear the UART buffer quickly enough.
Other than that, I can't imagine why it would pump source code etc. through the port. Was any of this code affected by ILOVEYOU?
