WIth a suggestion from Erik Moore, I used DCOMCNFG to set the server to launch using a particular account ( strangely, the same one I was logged in under ! ) , and immediately the network names started working from the server!

Now if only there had been an error message to tell me that network resources were not available ( maybe Drive Not Ready or such !! )
