It is possible to attempt it, but remember, you have to reset all the registry entries too, it's not a trivial matter. My LAN tries this in login scripts, but there are often problems, and they have to go around afterward to different machines to cleanup messes. Sometimes the problems are quite serious. I'm pretty skeptical of that old DOS-style technique by now.

They don't attempt it much any more, as there are too many different configurations and OS now, it's just looking for trouble.

We usually just email out instructions for running setups, no big deal. You can force it by replacing the EXE (local or server) with an EXE that does nothing but tell the user to run the new setup. If it's a local EXE you can replace it with a bootup BAT, that a BAT is still good for. And my LAN still uses BATs to launch setups and plant markers.

We have discussed this topic before here, but maybe someone else can steer you to some better idea. I will definitely *not* say my agency's techniques are at the bleeding edge :)
