Before everyone gets too hung up on "winning", I thought I'd share a story that I read in yesterday's Atlanta Journal-Constitution sports section. I was hoping that it would be available on their web site (www.ajc.com) but I wasn't able to find it.

The story was about two young women who have been friends since they were kids. One girl's father is a tae kawn do master. Both his daughter and her friends were and are students of his. Because they have been in different weight classifications the two friends had never faced each.

This year, for the first time, tae kawn do is a medal event in the summer Olympics in Syndey. Both girls attend the U.S. Olympic tryouts. There, because of a change in the weight classifications, they must face each other. Since they've practiced and studied together for years, neither can gain an advantage, and the match ends in a draw on points. The judge's decision (all matches must be decided one way or another) award the decision to the friend of the master's daughter. Since it's double elmination, they may have to face each other again, and since only one can make the team it will be an even more importnat match.

Well, the master's daughter does advance to finals. In the semi-finals, her friend sustains a dislocated kneecap in the final seconds of the match, but manages to hang on for the win. With the injury, however, there is no way for her to stand any chance of winning against the master's daughter. However, the master's daughter comes to the conclusion that she cannot allow the injury from preventing her friend from realizing her goal and forfeits the match.
