If you're using a network that's slow relative to the speed of your local hard drive, the whole thing makes sense, and short of a faster LAN, there isn't much that can be done.

I will try the NCOPY command that was suggested in a few tests and see if that will make a difference. As for a faster Network (always, always), I will put an order in to the Network folks for a half-a-pound of lightening and see what the charge will be. :)
