From my perspective... the most helpful of all answers are those that help solve the immediate problem or question presented (if that is possible) and then point the person to reliable help in any format(books, old mag articles, online, etc) so the person can continue their learning.

Providing a real answer to the question is ok. Pointing to a reasource is ok. But ok is kind of like kissing your grandma. Doing both is excellent and it's like kissing your sweetheart!
