I'm replying to this message because I wanted to add this thing I just found to this thread. Problem is solved now, but I wanted to add this other "trick" to the thread. (Sort of quasi-UT/Wikis :-))
I was having a READ-ONLY VCX crisis during a recompile all of the project. I couldn't tell which vcx was hanging (the path ate up the whole status bar). If you open the project like a table (USE project.pjx) and browse it, there is a column called TIMESTAMP. You will see progressive timestamps down the column for files that were recompiled. Where you see the zeroes start is where your compile froze.
